Pride is an important event for us that we utilise to demonstrate our strong commitment to and solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
With equality laws and gay weddings in the news, and queer culture in the mainstream far more than it ever has been, you may wonder why we still bother with Pride – haven’t the battles been won now? Here are some recent statistics from Stonewall about being LGBTQ+ in the UK:
• Only half of lesbian, gay and bi people and trans people feel able to be open about their sexual orientation or gender identity to everyone in their family.
• More than a third of LGBTQ+ staff have hidden that they are LGBTQ+ at work for fear of discrimination.
• One in five LGBTQ+ people have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
So, when we see the glitter and rainbows this summer, we should remember that Pride isn’t just a celebration, but it’s also raising awareness of these issues and fighting for equality and human rights across the world.
